Bowhead Hunter
A hunter stands on the frozen shore. Impending light of spring, has opened this ice-bound shore to narrow leads. He keeps a hopeful eye for bowhead whales as they return to the arctic sea, to feed and bare their young. A walrus skin umiak skims silently along the open leads. The hunter’s ivory and slate harpoon finds its mark, held fast with strong seal hide line. A stricken Bowhead whale sings it's dying song. As the people pull the lifeless body of the whale from the frigid water, they sing songs of thankfulness to the whales’ spirit. It will feed the people for some time.
