In The Shadow Of The Mammoth

In the shadow of the mammoth a wolf calls out it's lonely arctic song. Moose browse on rough willow bark and twigs. Their movements frighten a covey of ptarmigan; they explode from the snow cover. A short fast flight they plunge into the snow once again, to hide from foxes owls and lynx. The first winter snow has covered the mineral stained tusks of a mammoth, preserved for 15 thousand years in permafrost. The frozen mouth still holds un-chewed buttercups and grasses. This timeless frozen land does not reveal its secrets. It sleeps on, under a blanket of frozen moss and snow. An eagle soars on the frigid air.
